More Than 165 Years of Agricultural Tradition
History & Heritage
The story of the West Niagara Fair is deeply rooted in the history of agriculture and community in Niagara. Agricultural fairs have been part of Ontario life for more than two centuries, serving as places where farmers, families, and neighbours could gather to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, and strengthen community connections. The tradition traces its roots to the earliest agricultural societies established in Upper Canada, including those founded in the Niagara region in the late 1700s.
Closer to home, the Fair's heritage is built upon two historic agricultural societies that served their communities for more than 150 years. The first Beamsville Fair was held on October 8, 1857, while the first Smithville Fair followed in 1878. Though many agricultural fairs once operated throughout historic Lincoln County, the Beamsville and Smithville fairs endured for generations, supported by dedicated volunteers and strong community involvement.
In 2012, these two proud traditions came together through the amalgamation of the Lincoln Agricultural Society and the Smithville Agricultural Society, creating the West Niagara Agricultural Society. By combining their experience, history, and commitment to agriculture, they established a stronger organization positioned to serve the region for generations to come. The opening of the West Niagara Agricultural Centre & Fairgrounds in Grassie in 2015 marked the beginning of a new chapter while preserving the legacy that came before it.
Today, the West Niagara Fair continues to evolve while maintaining the spirit of a traditional country fair. It remains a place where agriculture is celebrated, community connections are strengthened, and people of all ages can showcase their talents, learn new skills, and create lasting memories. As we honour the generations who built this tradition, we remain committed to carrying it forward for future generations.
