Tricia Vaughan Memorial Scholarship Winners 2018
By Ann Marie Chechalk
The annual Tricia Vaughan Memorial Scholarship celebrates young leaders who have excelled in their achievements as 4-H club members and at school and in their community. Now in its twelfth year, the purpose of this program is to develop an awareness of the importance and benefits of higher education. It is offered by the West Niagara Agricultural Society with the cooperation and support of the Niagara
4-H Association to current members of Niagara 4-H who have completed at least six projects and are enrolled in a recognized post-secondary education program.
Three scholarships were awarded this year in the amount of $1500.00 and $1000.00 and $750.00 Applicants submitted a copy of their academic report cards of their last year of secondary school, a list of their extra-curricular activities, their completed
4-H clubs, involvement in the community and a brief essay discussing their personal goals.
Tricia’s parents Norman and Catharine were on hand to celebrate the three young people and present the scholarships.
“Once again the scholarship selection committee did an excellent job of choosing three very deserving winners,” said Catharine Vaughan. “We were especially pleased to note that all three recipients have been active participants in our local fairs, and 4-H clubs and community events alongside of and in conjunction with..... Our daughter, Tricia Vaughan.”
“Austin Gibson, (not present-award accepted by his mother) has been active in fair competitions, 4-H clubs, community events and local athletics from a very young age. As a matter of fact we have a photo of Austin and Tricia’s son Marcus being named “best dressed cowboys” at the Smithville Fair when they were three and four years old!
Austin has always been an enthusiastic, determined and talented competitor. He is planning to continue his education at Niagara College this Fall, and we are very pleased to present him with this scholarship of $750.00.”
“We have known Mattea Lodewyk for many years. She attended several 4-H clubs and participated in several activities at our family farm. She was always eager, smiling, and co-operative and dedicated to doing her best. Her excellence in all that she attempted was an inspiration to us all. Tricia often commented on how wonderful it was to have Mattea, (and her siblings) at her club meetings. Mattea has shown her ability to be an excellent show person at the Royal Winter Fair, and has won many awards for her skill. She plans to attend Brock University this year, working towards a degree in Medical Science. We are pleased to present her with $1000.00 to aid her in her studies.”
“Our family has known Marijke’s family for many years. Her grandparents were dedicated dairy farmers, her Mom and siblings were 4-H dairy club members alongside of our daughter Tricia, and I can remember Marijke, as a new baby, coming to the Library where I worked. We have watched Marijke grow, compete, and succeed for many years. Marijke is, and always has been, enthusiastic, competitive, and eager to do her best. She has demonstrated excellence in 4-H, school and community events. This past year she was our wonderful West Niagara Fair Ambassador. It is my very great pleasure to present Marijke with $1500.00 toward her future education.”
